Early History

The Ashes - Possibly the greatest rivalry in sport, not just cricket. Enland against Australia, the historic Test Series that dates back originally to 1882.

It is played every 2 years, and alternates between the UK and Australia for the venues.

England lost the first match which was played at The Oval. An obituary published in The Sporting Times stated mockingly that:

"The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia."

The captain of the English side, The Honorable Ivo Bligh, promised to bring the 'Ashes' home the next winter, embracing the term that had created by the newspaper.

Australia are the more successful of the two sides, winning more Ashes Tests than England (150 of the 356 matches compared to England's 110 victories) throughout the history of the series.

Austalia have also won the most series with 34 overall wins, that puts them just one series ahead going into this competition.
